Cicada Eyes – Single Image Sundays

These guys are making a furious noise in the trees here in North Carolina. Every 13 years or so, depending on the species they come around, and I was lucky enough to get some shots of one over the weekend. I believe it may be part of Brood I, but I’m not totally sure. I took this with my iPhone, using Hipstamatic and a macro attachment lens.

What do you think? Have you experienced any of these critters around your neck of the woods? Let us hear from you in the comments!

Mooney’s – Single Image Sundays

When an afternoon thunderstorm sends you into the right spot at the right time…

Downtown on a Saturday just after the start of a thunderstorm was the perfect place for this quick snapshot of a peaceful moment, reflecting on the day so far and the future ahead, while anticipating Mooneys‘ excellent shawerma over hummus. In retrospect, I’m grateful for having the technology and inclination to document the moment. It was one of those simple times that’s easy to forget, but worthwhile to remember.

MARS: Well Lookee Here – Single Image Sundays

Mars: It’s On!

20120806-053011.jpg

This is one Sunday where whatever I typically share would not be nearly as compelling as this single image right here, fresh from Mars. Absolutely amazing.

And although it technically disqualifies this post as a Single Image Sunday, perhaps even more amazing is this:

Human beings send a robot to Mars, and take a picture as it lands with a satellite already there. This also happened in 2008, but this photo is even more clear, and still mindblowing. Via redorbit.com

What do you think? Have you been following this story? Were you witness to any other major space exploration milestones? Do you think humans will set foot on Mars in your lifetime? Let us hear from you in the comments!

National Moth Week: Hemithea aestivaria

Single Image Sundays – One of several to come for National Moth Week, July 23-29, 2012

Since I’ve discovered iphoneography, I’ve also been discovering more beauty in our everyday surroundings. And after purchasing a Photojojo macro lens for my iPhone, I’ve also developed a fascination with and appreciation for moths. I never took much notice of moths until getting a close up view for some macro insect photography, inspired by what I’d been seeing at Instagram.

I had no idea moths were so butterfly-like, hairy to the point of fuzziness, and often with large, deep eyes. I used Hipstamatic to get this photo of one on my front door. If you’re interested, definitely check out NationalMothWeek.org for more info.

Could this Moth be Hemithea aestivaria?

If I had to guess, I’d say: Hemithea aestivaria, or the Common Emerald. If you have expertise in this field, please feel free to weigh in with a proper ID. More photos of this guy are at my Flickr photostream. Thanks!

What do you think? Ever discovered an interest in something after getting a closer look? Have you ever seen a particularly interesting moth? What are your favorite insects? Let us hear from you in the comments!

Cheers With A Sleeve Tattoo – Single Image Sundays

Cheers - Single Image Sundays

Dig this pic? Share it on Twitter (thanks).

It just so happened that my phone was ready for a quick snapshot when I got up to the bar last night. This bartender’s ace-up-the-sleeve tattoo, literally up a sleeve (though not the typical sleeve tattoo), makes an appropriate background for a highball glass alight with a candle. Shot with an iPhone4, processed using Noir and Dynamic Light. Check out my iPhoneography board for similar stuff. Cheers.

What do you think? Ever seen a cool tattoo at an appropriate moment for a photo opportunity? Do you take photos more often with your phone or with a camera? Let us hear from you in the comments!

East Meets West – Single Image Sundays

10 Jun

Ingredients: Downtown building, Spider in a window macro view, and a feather from a pillow on my black briefcase. I don’t think this is quite what @challengehub had in mind at Instagram for the #ch_archedwindow challenge, but hey; I had fun, and challenges help develop our skills.
